Replace Missing Teeth with a Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is a restoration designed to fill the space left by a missing tooth or teeth. A bridge can be supported by adjacent teeth on either side of the gap or by dental implants, depending upon your unique needs and goals. For the right candidates, we recommend implant-supported bridges, as they provide superior stability and security and promote bone regrowth at the site of a missing tooth. To ensure long-lasting, natural-looking results for all patients, Dr. Gary B. Dempsey uses only the finest restorative materials at his Oklahoma City, OK, office.

What is a Dental Bridge?

There are two types of dental bridges: a traditional bridge and an implant-supported bridge.

Traditional Bridge

A traditional dental bridge consists of a pontic, or artifical tooth, nestled between two dental crowns. The dental crowns are attached to teeth on either side of the gap, which are commonly called abutment teeth. These teeth must be strong and sound, as they will be reshaped to support your dental bridge.

Implant-Supported Bridge

An implant-supported bridge also combines a pontic and dental crowns. However, the crowns are affixed to dental implants. The dental implants replace the tooth roots, eliminating the need to modify abutment teeth. In addition, the implants prevent further jawbone atrophy, which can help to restore and preserve your oral health. However, in order to qualify for this procedure, you must have enough jawbone tissue to support the implants.

A traditional bridge will be attached to adjacent teeth, whereas an implant-supported bridge will be affixed to implant posts.

Do I Need a Bridge?

If you have one or more missing teeth in a row, you may qualify for this restorative treatment. Our team can conduct a thorough examination of your smile to determine whether you are a candidate for a dental bridge. We may request x-rays or other advanced images of your teeth and jaw to evaluate the health of remaining teeth and gums.

Dental Bridge Placement

If you are receiving a traditional bridge, your doctor will remove a small layer of enamel from adjacent teeth. This process can ensure that your dental crown fits comfortably in your bite. After modifying abutment teeth, we can take impressions of your smile, which will be used to create your custom bridge. We can check both the color and shape of your dental bridge before securing it in place, to ensure it blends seamlessly with your smile.

A dental bridge is a great solution for patients who wish to improve the form and function of their smile.

If you choose to restore your smile with an implant-supported bridge, you will first have to undergo dental implant surgery to place the posts. During this procedure, the doctor will embed the implant directly into your jawbone and provide you a temporary restoration to wear during recovery. After a three to six month healing period, you can return to our office to receive your custom-made bridge.
